The old name Zuytngr-Khaf (水返跤 ; lit. "water returning foot" ) refers to the fact that the tide from the Keelung River stops here and goes back to the sea. During Japanese rule, the place name was changed (Jidguo: 汐止 Shiodome, literally "end of tides"), which is the source of the current name.
