History

1875: officially founded with creation of Taipeh Prefecture
1885: work commenced to govern the island as a province
- Toaxtwn was to be the island's capital
- Taipag was designated temporary capital
1887: Fukien-Taiwan Province declared
- Taipag was promoted to capital
