Onomatopoeia exists in a significant number of words in Taiwanese.

hahaf - laugh
køef - chicken
lengloong (玲瓏 pleasantly crisp or clear sound, for example of jade), lenglioong
lamlaam - to mutter; to mumble; to murmur
meq - bleating of a sheep
piafng - sharp noise; bang; pop
- phiak
pheklek - thunderbolt; thunderclap
toom - sound of something thrown into a well
viaw - peekaboo game sound
