The old name Zuytngfkhaf (水返腳/水返跤 lit. "Water returning foot") refers to the fact that the tide from the Keelung River stops here and goes back to the sea. During Japanese rule, the place name was changed (Jidguo: 汐止 Shiodome, literally "end of tides"), which is the source of the current name.
