Words from Minyue (see Hokkien#Words_from_Minyue)

Some commonly used words, shared by all Min languages, came from the ancient Minyue (Ban'oat). They include the following examples, compared to the Fuzhou dialect, a Min Dong language:

Word MTL Foochow Romanized Meaning
khaf ([kʰa˥]) kă ([kʰa˥]) foot and leg
kviar ([kiã˥˩]) giāng [kiaŋ˧] son, child, whelp, a small amount
khuxn [kʰun˨˩] káung [kʰɑuŋ˧] to sleep
骿 phviaf [pʰiã˥] piăng [pʰiaŋ˥] back, dorsum
zhux [tsʰu˨˩] chuó, chió [tsʰuɔ˥˧] home, house
thaai [tʰai˨˦] tài [tʰai˥˧] to kill, to slaughter

1 laang is now typically represented by 人 (literary reading jiin).
