History

• Officially founded in 1875 with creation of Taipeh Prefecture
• Ca. 1885 the island's capital was intended to move from Tailaam to Toaxtwn, but was temporarily moved to Taipeh
• Taipeh was promoted to capital of the island sometime after 1887 and shortly before Japanese rule, which began in 1895
