The old name of Sanxia (三角湧; literally "triangular surge") refers to the meeting of the Dahan River, Sansia River, and "Horizontal River" (橫溪). In 1920, Taiwan's Japanese government designated it an administrative area named Sankyō (三峽; Romaji: Sankyō): "Three Gorges."

The old name of Sanxia (三角湧; literally "triangular surge") refers to the meeting of the Dahan River, Sansia River, and "Horizontal River" (橫溪). In 1920, Taiwan's Japanese government designated it an administrative area named Sankyō (三峽; Romaji: Sankyō): "Three Gorges."
