Short tones in Taiwanese end with h, p, t, or k sounds. In MTL the low short tones end with q, b, d, or g.
Word-final stops
Stop consonants and examples:
- h/q (Glottal stop, 開放促音): ciah, phaq (eat, hit)
- p/b (Bilabial stop, 唇上促音): zap, kab (ten, with)
- t/d (Alveolar stop, 舌前促音): zhat, pad (thief, eight)
- k/g (Velar stop, 喉頂促音): pak, pag (to lease, north)
- Note: The glottal "q" often sandhi's into shouting tone: bahzaxng
Ignoring tone, a total of 36 short-tone finals are found in the Dictionary of Frequently-Used Taiwan Minnan.
