A small number of multi-syllable Taiwanese words are homonyms: same sound, different meaning. They are generally two syllables, where the first syllable's citation tone was either tone 1 (high) or tone 5 (curving-up) before [[tone sandhi]]. In MTL they are written the same, but in POJ they are not.
Some MTL polysyllable words correspond to more than one valid [[POJ]] word. In most cases the original words are two syllables and become homophones after [[tone sandhi]] (the first syllable changes from high or curving-up tone to basic). After conversion from POJ or [[TL]] to MTL, they become homonyms as they share the same spelling.

A total of 96 MTL words with this property were found in the [[Maryknoll Taiwanese-English Dictionary]].

Some MTL polysyllable words correspond to more than one valid POJ word. In most cases the original words are two syllables and become homophones after tone sandhi (the first syllable changes from high or curving-up tone to basic). After conversion from POJ or TL to MTL, they become homonyms as they share the same spelling.
