A total of 96 MTL words that are homonyms were found in the [[Maryknoll Taiwanese-English Dictionary]]. This happens because of loss of tone information when syllables are put together to form a word ([[tone sandhi]]). In general, these words are two syllables, where the first syllable's citation tone is either tone 1 (high) or tone 5 (curving-up). Therefore two distinct words in [[POJ]] can map to the same word in MTL.
Some MTL polysyllable words correspond to more than one valid [[POJ]] word. In most cases the original words are two syllables and become homophones after [[tone sandhi]] (the first syllable changes from high or curving-up tone to basic). After conversion from POJ or [[TL]] to MTL, they become homonyms as they share the same spelling.

Combined with data from [[TBSS]], the total number increases to 125 MTL words:

Some MTL polysyllable words correspond to more than one valid POJ word. In most cases the original words are two syllables and become homophones after tone sandhi (the first syllable changes from high or curving-up tone to basic). After conversion from POJ or TL to MTL, they become homonyms as they share the same spelling.
