Used to be called Toaxtwn 🔊 (大墩); designated by the Qing as capital of the island (Taioaan-huo 🔊) in 1887.
After China lost the Sino-Japanese War in 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan by the Treaty of Shimonoseki...that's when they changed the name to Taichū (臺中, meaning "central Taiwan"), hence Taitiofng.
Things didn't work out; the capital was eventually moved to Taipag.
