• After China lost the Sino-Japanese War in 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan by the Treaty of Shimonoseki...that's when they changed the name from Toaxtwn 🔊 (大墩) to Taichū (臺中, Taitiofng, central Taiwan).
• Toaxtwn was even a temporary capital of the island.
• The capital was eventually moved to Taipag.
