Pangkiøo ( Banqiao District)

Name origin

  • The city's old name was Pangkiøo (枋橋 l. timbered bridge), which dates back to the Qing Dynasty during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1735 - 1796 AD), more than two hundred years ago.
  • A wooden bridge (locally called Pangkiøthaau (枋橋頭)) was built for pedestrians to cross a brook located in the west of today's Banqiao.
  • In 1920, the Japanese government modified the name to Jidguo板橋 Itabashi, l. planked bridge; read as Template:X2X.
  • The newer name is still written today, but is called "Banqiao" in Mandarin.
  • In Taiwanese, the old name Pangkiøo is still the norm.
