Some MTL words can be converted to more than one valid [[POJ]] word. This happens because of loss of tone information when MTL syllables are put together to form a word ([[tone sandhi]]). In general, the word is two syllables, where the first syllable's citation tone is either tone 1 (high) or tone 5 (curving-up). After conversion to MTL, they become homonyms (same spelling, same pronunciation).
Some MTL polysyllable words correspond to more than one valid [[POJ]] word. In most cases the original words are two syllables and become homophones after [[tone sandhi]] (the first syllable changes from high or curving-up tone to basic). After conversion from POJ or [[TL]] to MTL, they become homonyms as they share the same spelling.

Latest revision as of 18:48, 5 December 2021

Some MTL polysyllable words correspond to more than one valid POJ word. In most cases the original words are two syllables and become homophones after tone sandhi (the first syllable changes from high or curving-up tone to basic). After conversion from POJ or TL to MTL, they become homonyms as they share the same spelling.
