A total of 96 MTL words that are homonyms were found in the [[Maryknoll Taiwanese-English Dictionary]]. This happens because of loss of tone information when syllables are put together to form a word ([[tone sandhi]]). In general, these words are two syllables, where the first syllable's citation tone is either tone 1 (high) or tone 5 (curving-up). Therefore two distinct words in [[POJ]] can map to the same word in MTL.
There is a relatively small number of MTL words that can be converted to more than one valid [[POJ]] word. This happens because of loss of tone information when syllables are put together to form a word ([[tone sandhi]]).  


Combined with data from [[TBSS]], the total number increases to 125 MTL words:
